• Sometimes, when the kids go back to school, it's possible to have the beach all to yourself!

Summer By the Bay

Imagine sitting back with a glass of your favourite tipple, closing your eyes and feeling the sun sink into your bones as the gentle tumbling of the waves against the shore lulls you into a delightful torpor – replete with good food and contentment.

You open an eye to check the kids are still playing happily on the sandy beach a few yards away and settle back for some lighthearted people watching as your other half flicks through the papers and a colorful array of family groups and giggling teenagers stroll along Marine Parade in front of you. Bliss! And all courtesy of the wonderful terrace, good food and hospitality served up at By the Bay.

There’s nowhere better to while away a summer’s day and, as dusk falls, diners drift inside to enjoy a meal with friends against the backdrop of discreet pools of soft lighting, warm, glowing tables and the chatter and laughter of happy couples and groups enjoying a relaxed evening together.

And when the warm evenings linger, so do the diners on the terrace – entranced by the stars twinkling overhead and the moon rising over Golden Cap, shining its opalescent rays of light across the waters of Lyme Bay until they wash up with the waves at the doors of By the Bay.

Winter By the Bay

There’s nothing more uplifting on a wild winter’s day than a walk along Monmouth Beach towards the Cobb, watching the waves crash over the harbor wall and boil like a cauldron where the pebbles meet the historic stone, still steadfast after all these years.

The children have been fossil hunting and Dad’s pockets are heavy with their finds. The dog’s excited and exhausted from chasing seagulls – tongue lolling, tail wagging. Everyone’s peckish.

Just a short stroll past the harbor and the lights of By the Bay are twinkling – inviting you to stop for a while. For a snack, for lunch, to rest and take in the view. With our comfy sofas and panoramic windows, there’s no better refuge from the inter weather than By the Bay. The welcome’s warm, the hot chocolate a hit with all the family and the low season table d’hote menu is extraordinarily good value.

There’s every reason to linger a while. Walkers pore over maps – perhaps asking advise from our team, who are always happy to share their local knowledge of Lyme’s special places and their favourite haunts – photographers snap the view, children are entertained with coloring sets and quizzes, Mums and Dads gossip over the papers.

Live Music

There’s something very special about live music. It has a style and charisma all of its own, and at By the Bay we love to harness this by bringing local talent – and that from further afield – to paly in the restaurant and delight our customers over an evening meal.

Throughout the year we have live music on Friday and Saturday nights – not every week, but certainly every month – and the gigs are advertised through our Facebook page and twitter feed. Our VIPs and regular visitors also receive a monthly newsletter with information about upcoming dates and artists – so if you’d like to be kept in the loop about what’s happening, when, send us an email and we’ll add you to our list!

Music and food

Music and food are always a winning combination and it’s a good idea to make a reservation in advance when we’ve a live gig in-house. But we like to encourage spontaneous visitors too – there’s often room on the sofas if we’ve run out of tables where you can sip a glass of wine, enjoy a pint and snack on some olives!

From Beatles tribute bands to London cabaret stars, we’ve a varied pool of favorites who we love to invite back to By the Bay time and again because they get the balance right: not so loud that you can’t enjoy your meal, but engaging enough to create the best atmosphere for the perfect night out.

Sometimes there’s dancing in the aisles; sometimes there are spontaneous sing-alongs; but mostly our guests simply enjoy their meal and then sit back and relax with an after dinner drink while they listen to the music and relax.

Our musicians

Celine Dos Santos
Celine’s been a regular at By the Bay for a couple of years now and it’s always a joy to welcome her back. With talent and good looks in equal measure, her music is the perfect fit with our chilled, easy-going beachfront vibe. With her smoky vocal style
– which sometimes has a French accent twist hinting at her roots across the Channel
– Celine plays a mix of acoustic pop / rock originals and feel good familiar covers ranging from KT Tunstall, the Stereophonics and Bruno Mers to Rihana, the Steve Miller Band and the Jackson Five.

Charlie Bicknell
We first saw Charlie when she was performing at the Crazy Coqs in London’s West end and when we did our research, we discovered that her cabaret show is highly acclaimed across the UK, with the Observer describ
Charlie Bicknelling her as combining a gloriously dark sense of humour with an amazing voice, and the Sunday Times calling her a ‘classy act’. An evening with Charlie is one you’ll remember for a long time for its entertainment value, laughs and fantastic talent. With her passion for jazz and a highly unusual repertoire, Charlie delivers an evening of wit, style and charm not to be missed.

The Fab Twins
The clue’s in the name – these guys love of the Fab Four comes through in every note of their foot-tapping, hip-swinging sashay through Beatlemania. All your favourites are here, together with several surprises and little played gems. Stace and Jon specialise in harmony-based acoustics and whilst their repertoire is founded on their Beatles heritage, they also cover lots of other harmony classics, including Simon and Garfunkel, the Everley Brothers, Crosby, Stills and Nash and Crowded House. During their last visit to By the Bay, there was dancing in the aisles, arm waving and body swaying reminiscences and chuckles of surprise at the appearance of a ukulele half way through the set. Intrigued? You will be and a fun evening is guaranteed with these guys.

The Mersey Belles
Step back in time and take a trip down memory lane with this stupendous vintage ukulele duo. Cousins Nancy and Pearl were the perfect musical fit for our D-Day celebrations here in Lyme Regis: vibrant, authentic and down-right fabulous – and we look forward to being able to invite them back again soon! We first heard of them when they played for a wedding here at By the Bay last summer and we’ve been looking for an excuse to invite them back ever since. If you’ve been caught up in the energy of the recent ukulele revival or just love any thing retro, this is an evening not to be missed!

Milly Riquelme
We like to ring the changes here at By the Bay and Milly brings a different vibe and tempo to our evening entertainment schedule. Born in Santiago de Cuba, she has the vibrant beat of Cuban music running in her veins. She studied in Havana and has played with members of the prestigious Buena Vista Social Club and today tours with her own band, La Cubana. Milly is a familiar face further along the coast in Bridport, but was new to the Lyme Regis crowd when she first played at By the Bay during summer 2014. Since then, we’ve discovered that everyone enjoys her as much as we did when we first caught her performance as she expertly blends together traditional love songs and rhythms mixed in with effervescent acoustic energy you’d expect of a girl from Cuba!

Steve Waters
Steve is another By the Bay favourite and is well known across the South West’s thriving music scene. He’s been playing guitar and singing since the tender age of 11 and grew up listening to the Rolling Stones and the Beatles before getting hooked on Simon and Garfunkel and Cat Stevens. Since then, he’s never looked back; acoustic music has become his greatest love over the years and today he is defined by his own unique style as much as that of his heroes from the past. A prolific and talented lyricist in his own right, an evening in the presence of Steve and his music is always a pleasure.
